Tumblr,

I miss you. I  miss not having much of a life. I’m not bragging. I’ve been through a lot. Promise to let me back into you arms when May 16th rolls around.

Love,

Cassie

first day of student-teaching

My actual teacher is out all week because her daughter is having a baby, but I’m getting to work with her collaborative teacher that deals especially with some of the kids in this 8th Grade English class that have learning disabilities. My first day can be pretty much happily summed up by this one experience:

I was observing Mr. G’s class (so I didn’t just have to watch the sub be boring), and Mrs. C, my collab teacher, was there as well. The students were working on how to dissect writing prompts for standardized tests, and they were working in groups. I noticed one girl—who Mrs. C kept calling “sunshine”—that had her head down and refused to talk or get into a group with anyone. Mrs. C asked her a few times if she wanted to work with anyone else, but she just refused.

I floated around to a few tables, helping out where necessary. And then something caught my eye. “Sunshine” was staring at me..and she had her hand raised.

Really thinking nothing of it, I came over and she asked me a few questions, and I helped her out. Also showed her a few different useful ways of highlighting, since we were doing that as well. At the end of the class, she walked up to me and thanked me.

Right after that, Mrs. C came up to me. “Did she talk to you?” “Yeah..why?” “She never talks to anyone. She’s autistic, and has a really difficult time approaching others, especially teachers. For her to have approached you…that’s awesome.”

I was so excited for her. I didn’t really do anything, but it just reminded me, right from the start, why I love doing this.

:DDDD
